Volunteering, Learning & Connecting

Over a dozen students, alumni and faculty attended this year’s SIGGRAPH 2015 Conference in Los Angeles, California. With programs running from August 8th through August 13th, this annual international conference is hosted by Association for Computing Machinery’s (ACM) Special Interest Group in Computer Graphics (SIGGRAPH) is the premiere gathering for the greatest minds in computer graphics related industries including game studios, animation houses, visual effects shops and the full ecosystem of researchers, institutions and technology companies that enable them to produce their magic.

This year’s conference clearly underscored the increasing importance and growth of immersive experience content and technologies in these industries. The “VR Village” exhibit hall was dedicated to the demonstration of Virtual Reality, Full Dome projection, integrated motion capture experiences and other rapidly developing forms of immersive media.

Members of Drexel’s own SIGGRAPH Student Group volunteered at the conference, assisting with organization, guidance and  support for the hundreds of talks and events as thousands of attendees engaged in conference activities. Additionally, Group Chair Chris Cerrone and Vice Chair Ian Hartman arranged a well attended Drexel Alumni gathering and an LA studio tour circuit featuring visits to several major animation and visual effects facilities where alumni are hard at work. Special thanks are due to alumni Nate Shaw(2011) & Dan Bodenstein(2010) at Method Studios, Corinne DeOrsay(2010) & Nate Lapinski(2013) at MPC and Melissa Cell(2012) & Girish Balakrishnan(2013) at Digital Domain for helping facilitate these visits.
